What Is My ISP and Why Does It Show My Location?

ISP stands for Internet Service Provider. It is the company that gives you internet access. In Sri Lanka, common ISPs are Dialog Axiata, SLT, Mobitel, and Lanka Bell. In Europe and USA, there are many other providers.

Your ISP knows your approximate location because it assigns you an IP address from its pool. Each IP range is registered to a city or region in a global database. So when you check your IP, it shows your city based on that registration.

Does this mean your ISP tracks your exact house? No. It only knows the tower or exchange you connect through. For example, thousands of people in Colombo may share the same location result like Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is not your exact street address.

Why is ISP information useful? It helps you know who provides your internet, troubleshoot slow speeds, and understand why some websites show content based on your country. For example, if you see an unknown ISP on our tool, it could mean your VPN is on or you are connected to a different network.

Can you hide your ISP? You cannot hide your ISP without a VPN. A VPN replaces your ISP with the VPN company’s network. You can check your ISP anytime with our free IP Pulse tool on the homepage. It is fast, free, and does not store your data.
